PubMed is a biomedical and life sciences database maintained by a division of the National Library of Medicine known as the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). It is a large resource with more than 5600 journals indexed and greater than 22 million total citations. Searches conducted in PubMed provide references that are more specific for the intended topic compared with other popular search engines. One of the interfaces for searching Medline is PubMed, provided by the NLM for free access via the Internet (www.pubmed.gov). Also searchable with the PubMed interface are non-Medline citations, i.e. articles supplied by publishers to the NLM.
